Tips for Surviving Long Nursing Shifts

As a registered nurse, I have experienced firsthand the challenges and rewards of the nursing career. A nurse's unwavering dedication to caring for others is truly remarkable. However, amidst the demands and intensity of nursing, it's crucial to prioritize your well-being.

  1. Start your day with a positive mindset. Before stepping into your workplace, take a few moments to set a positive intention for the day.

  2. Take a break when you can. As a nurse, getting caught up in the job's demands and pushing yourself to the limit can be easy. However, taking breaks when you can is crucial for recharging and maintaining your energy levels.

  3. Practice mindfulness. Techniques such as deep breathing or grounding exercises can help you stay present and focused during your shift.

  4. Stay hydrated and nourished. Keeping your energy levels up is crucial for getting through a long shift.

  5. Lean on your support system. Whether it's your coworkers, friends, or family, having a solid support system can make all the difference in navigating the challenges of being a nurse.

  6. Set boundaries. Knowing your limits and setting boundaries are essential when taking on additional responsibilities or working overtime.

  7. Decompress after your shift. Once your shift is over, take some time to decompress and transition out of work mode.
